A quick look at the 2018 Toledo football team and one thing stand out: it’s a young team.
Of the 22 players currently listed on the roster, 16 are underclassmen, and 12 are incoming freshman. Even though the Boomers are coming off of a postseason-less 2-7 record, the youthful roster is exciting for head coach Steve Cragun.
“It doesn’t matter to me if they are freshman or seniors, or if they are the best athletes or not,” Cragun said. “I just want guys that are dedicated. I really feel strongly about a lot of these young kids, these freshmen and sophomores that are hard workers and are dedicated to our team and to what we are trying to do, and it is something that we can build on.”
After a 2017 season where the Boomers more so resembled the nail than the hammer, an emphasis during the spring and early summer practices has been to become more physical — especially on the defensive side of the ball. Cragun liked the improvement he saw during practices and 7-on-7 matches against bigger schools.
