NEWPORT — The Yaquina Head Lighthouse won’t be shining for the next two weeks, while the unique LED stack is repaired offsite. The bulb was removed on Wednesday by the Coast Guard after it began to fail.
The lighthouse has been lit since 1873, but the one-of-a-kind light was installed by the Coast Guard’s Aids to Navigation Team out of Coos Bay in December. It was designed to be more efficient in providing a navigation point to those on the ocean. The advantages of the new light included a less frequent need for maintenance and a longer life altogether.
