This chunky, 13 lb. cabezon was decked Monday just north of Depoe Bay by afternoon fisherman Donn Murphy of Bend aboard the Dockside Charters vessel Triumph. While cabezon fishing by boat closes Aug. 16-Dec. 31, bank anglers can still collect these fish.
Another fish collected by Donn Murphy on his Depoe Bay excursion was this example of a black sea bass, probably the most numerous of the many species of rockfish encountered by anglers at the central Oregon coast.
Scott McMullen, a member of the governor’s Ocean Policy Advisory Committee, decked a halibut Saturday while fishing with Terry Thompson out of Depoe Bay.
Former county commissioner Thompson hoists the 50-lb. Pacific halibut he reeled in Saturday at a secret hotspot west of Depoe Bay. Thompson drives a 29-ft. boat he designed himself to make one-man fishing economical and efficient. “There are no creature comforts,” he said.
