David passed beyond us unexpectedly at his home in Newport, Oregon, at 88. He and his beloved wife, Mary, were both active in Christian Science, and married in 1961 at Fayetteville, Arkansas. They both were involved with the Univ. of Ark, then the Univ. of Illinois, and finally the Univ. of Connecticut. Dave got his MA in journalism, but felt the draw of his upbringing on an Illinois farm, and turned to farming in Missouri before taking over the family’s 1883 farm in Illinois. They enjoyed traveling - the US, Canada and Europe, and maintained their love affair for those 49 years. He retired to the Oregon coast, enjoying its mild weather and ocean view.
He is predeceased by his son, George, three siblings, and survived by daughters Nancy Altshue and Margie White; step-sons Charles and Richard Ford; eleven grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Dave’s wit, humor, gracious manner, and care for others won over everyone he met. His gentle, sweet nature will be missed.
