The Coastal Arts Guild welcomes Tom Webb for his presentation “Behind the Gallery Walls: Curating at the Newport Visual Arts Center.”
Webb is the director of the VAC for the Oregon Coast Council for Arts. He will be speaking at the monthly luncheon of the Coastal Arts Guild at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the VAC, located at 777 NW Beach Drive. He will discuss how exhibits emerge at the VAC, the different gallery spaces and how his professional and personal background led to his role at there.
Webb has been the director of the VAC for the past five years. His primary focus includes exhibition planning, facilities management and arts education. Under his leadership, the VAC has enjoyed significant facility upgrades, people have noted the increased quality and diversity of exhibition programming and OCCA youth-arts programming at the VAC has been revitalized.
Before moving to Newport, Webb was a longtime Portlander involved with the arts, conservation issues, publishing, education and nonprofit management. His former roles included executive director for Orlo, a nonprofit environmental arts group, editor-in-chief for The Bear Deluxe Magazine, editor at Portland State University and instructor at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Webb’s work has been recognized by the Oregon Arts Commission, Literary Arts, the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Utne Reader, The Oregonian and Willamette Week.
Besides serving as the director of the VAC, Webb sits on the Newport Public Arts Committee and the board of the Nye Beach Merchants Association. He was also an arts representative on Newport’s 2040 Visioning Committee.
