VFW officials to visit Siletz

Debra Wright, Department of Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars 2020-2021 Auxiliary President, and Past Department of Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Richard Higgins (2018-2019) will be in Siletz on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Wright will be visiting district nine’s auxiliary meeting, which will be held at the Paul Washington 732 VFW Hall. Wright’s theme this year is “Our Hero’s Wore Dog Tags and Combat Boots.”

Each year, the department president visits all districts meetings in the state. Currently, there are 14 districts. She will be filling the members in on what the national president wants her state auxiliaries to do and to help in any way she can.

District nine consists of Paul Washington Post 732 and Auxiliary in Siletz, James Pat Brumbaugh Post 4227 in Toledo, Heceta Post 3156 in Waldport and Florence Post 3232 and Auxiliary in Florence. Each district meets four times a year to teach its members what the programs are for the program year and to assist whenever needed.

It is up to the auxiliaries to help their posts by teaching young adults proper flag etiquette, patriotism, honor and working throughout the community so that the veterans and their families are not forgotten. There are scholarships available for students in middle and high school. There are monetary awards that can be won by these students, which can help them with their education. Contact Debby Fawver at [email protected] or 541-270-8260 for more information. The deadline for two scholarships is Oct. 31.

Siletz Auxiliary meets at the VFW Hall the third Friday of the month during the summer and early fall and at the library after that. The auxiliary would welcome any person who wants to help their community, the children in the area and the veterans and their families.

Eligibility is based on having a family member who served overseas during a war or conflict. Husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, granddaughters and grandsons of the eligible veteran who are 16 year and older qualify. If you are interested in finding out if you are eligible and want to make a difference, call Fawver. Membership dues for one year are $25, plus $5 for the Ritual and Bylaws book and membership pin.
