Tuition hike is painful, but may be necessary


It’s incredibly difficult to keep a college solvent. State and federal support is a fraction of what it was in decades past. Personnel and retirement costs, especially, are rising faster than the market can keep up with, and most colleges need to make a tough decision: either they can cut back on the quality or quantity of their programs, or they can pass the increased cost onto already broke college students, a demographic least able to shoulder higher expenses.
