The Newport 60+ Activity Center invites people to join in a trip to Junction City on Thursday, Aug. 8, for the Scandinavian Festival, an annual Northwest celebration since 1961.
This event celebrates Scandinavian heritage and presents the cultures of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
There’s a lot to see and do at this festival. Actors and storytellers in colorful costumes weave through the crowd, delighting young and old. Regional and international folk dancers perform on stage throughout the day. Opportunities abound to see traditional crafts demonstrations, including hardanger embroidery, bobbin lace and tatted lace. And food booths offer such treats as meat loaf in sour cream pastry, pickled herring, sweet and sour cabbage, traditional pancakes and much more.
The cost for this trip is $17. The group will leave from the Newport 60+ Activity Center at 8 a.m. and return around 5 p.m.
To register, go online at www.newportoregon.gov/sc and click on the dark blue banner “Browse the catalog and register.” Also on this site is a listing of additional trips, hikes, events, classes and presentations.
