The city of Newport’s Elton Pier Award is named in honor of a long-time city employee and volunteer firefighter. The award is given annually to an individual exhibiting many of the qualities exhibited by Elton Pier, including dependability, hard work, resourcefulness, compassion, motivation of others and a commitment to public service through volunteerism and city employment.
On Jan. 22, the 2020 Elton Pier Award was presented to Travis Reeves, senior systems administrator for the city of Newport’s information technology department.
Nominations for Reeves included praise that he is always ready to help and is willing to drop what he is doing to solve a crisis. It was also stated that he is very knowledgeable about many topics and is not afraid to say, “I do not know how to fix this. Let me do some research and get back to you.” And Reeves is described as fun to work with and usually in a positive mood. One person said in their nomination, “I do not think I have ever seen him angry or upset. He is very professional, works hard, always helpful, has a good attitude at all times and responds quickly. He is extremely knowledgeable and very personable.”
City Manager Spencer Nebel said, “Travis is truly deserving of this award, and the city is grateful for his dedication and commitment.”
