NEWPORT — A four-way meet among track rivals spotlighted a handful of state-title challengers on Tuesday.

Casting the longest shadow was Newport’s Jake Tucker, who launched the 12 lb. shot to a 55-02 score, shattering the 52-11.5 school record he set in 2018. The effort elevated Tucker to No. 2 in statewide, all-school rankings, behind No. 1 Mario Kis of Tualatin. Kis tossed the shot 56-11 at a meet on April 10.

“Jake can throw farther than that, absolutely,” remarked Coach Kurt Hargett, who predicted Tucker would claim the state title in 2019. “It wouldn’t surprise me if he threw 60 feet.”

The April 9 meet drew powerful teams from Woodburn, Philomath and Stayton, but primarily served as a warmup for upcoming district finals May 9-11. Incidentally, the meet burnished the statewide rankings of some of Newport’s top track stars, including:

• Jake Tucker, ranked No. 2 in state brackets and No. 1 in 4A for shot put (55-2)

• Tanner Stottlemyre, ranked No. 2 in the state for the 200 Meters (23.70), 8th in the 100 Meters (11.57) and No. 5 in the javelin (162-2)

• Rio Johns, ranked No. 2 in the 1500 Meters (4:12.33)

• Kai Daniels, ranked 2nd in 300 Meter Hurdles (42.82) and 8th in 110 Meter Hurdles (42.82)

• Max Moore, ranked No.1 in state in discus (158-10) by a 13-2 edge, and No. 4 in shot put (48-9.5)

• Justin Plechaty, ranked No. 5th in High Jump (6-0)

• Quintin Travis, ranked No. 7 in the High Jump (5-10)

• Colton Ledbury, ranked 8th in Pole Vault (11-7)

• Izabells McLane, ranked 4th in both the Women’s 100 Meter Hurdles (16:63) and 300 Hurdles (49:22)

• Hallie Hargett, ranked 2nd in Javelin (126-10) and 4th in discus (114-0)

• Madleine Hargett, 3rd in Javelin (123-9)

• and Ari Gomez, ranked 9th in Ttiple Jump (32-1.5)

The women’s 4x400 Meter Relay team of Grace Hargett, Izzy McLane, Ari Gomez and Hannah Driebergen was ranked 5th at press time.
