With just under four minutes left in the game, the Toledo boys basketball looked like a team starting to come unraveled.
A lead that was once as large as 18 in the first half had disappeared and was now a three-point deficit against a hot-shooting Bandon squad. The perfect start to conference play and the 17-game Sunset Conference winning streak that dates back to 2016 was in jeopardy of coming to an end.
Toledo head coach Eddie Townsend called a timeout. His message wasn’t a rear-end chewing or inspirational speech, but rather, a reminder that the team had practiced and prepared for situations like the one they found them in.
“In that moment, it’s ‘first of all, we need to get a stop,’” Townsend said. “I just told them what we are going to do, I told them we were going to go Jaxon, we are going to let Jaxon set up where he wants to and get him the ball.”
