Toledo falters, drops first two games in Pendleton


PENDLETON — With a minute left in the game, trailing by nine, head coach Eddie Townsend started to see the writing on the wall. It was a similar moment that the Toledo boys basketball team had been in before — a double-digit deficit, time winding down — and came out victorious. But everything had to perfectly fall into place. In the elimination game of the 2A state basketball tournament in Pendleton, those breaks didn’t come. The Boomers’ season ended with a 60-49 loss to Grant Union. “There was a time when I just took a deep breath and said, ‘not this year,’” Townsend said. The reality of the moment hit Nate Cross with 30 seconds left in what would be the senior’s final seconds as a Boomer basketball player.
