The tale of the lighthouse ghost

No doubt the tale of a Yaquina Bay Lighthouse ghost recounted by Dorothy Wall in her “Yaquina Lighthouses of the Oregon Coast” (1994) and recently reprinted in these pages was based on folklore she may have heard while working as a camp host at the site.

The actual fictional tale of Muriel Trevenard, the imagined lighthouse ghost, appeared in a story by Lischen M. Miller published by “Pacific Monthly,” later “Sunset Magazine,” in 1899. You can listen to the entire story on for firsthand experience of the tale.

And you can read an updated version of poor Muriel’s saga in a novel, “The Lighthouse Ghost of Yaquina Bay,” published by the Lincoln County Historical Society in 2017, in which her story is brought into the present day.
