The road back to Liberty

On Saturday, it will have been 364 days since the Newport boys soccer team captured their first state title. Nearly an entire calendar year later, the Cubs will be right back where they were, at Liberty High School, playing for a chance to recapture the state crown. “Our ultimate team goal at the beginning of the season was to get back to the championship,” said head coach Ollie Richardson. “All the players felt it, they knew they had the talent to be back in the state championship game, and they’ve achieved that.” But the road for the Cubs to get back to the championship game couldn’t be more different than a year ago. In 2016, the Cubs won their conference, going undefeated against league opponents to capture their first conference title. Winning the conference gave them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
