Thankful for contributions

The American Legion Post 116 and the Ladies Auxiliary in Newport would like to thank the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund for their generous donation.

With the Siletz Tribe’s donation and donations from businesses and community members, the American Legion had the ability to provide over 400 Thanksgiving dinners and more than 600 gifts for the Children’s Christmas.

This is almost double what we have done in our history of providing meals and Christmas. This could not have happened without the support from the community as a whole. How fortunate we are to live in such a wonderful community.

With that said, we also need to thank the volunteers who make these two events successful. These volunteers are members of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary.

With this being a different kind of year, we needed to think outside the box as to how the meals and Christmas gifts were going to distributed. We did a drive-thru for both. The 25 volunteers for the dinner did all the cooking of a Thanksgiving meal, boxed up the meals with desserts and then handed them out at the front door to those who drove up. Then they had to do cleanup.

We had 15 auxiliary volunteers who wrapped, tagged and then handed out the age-appropriate gifts as the families drove by in cars. We also had Santa on hand to greet all the families who came by. We kept the magic of Christmas going for another year.

Again, our humble thank you to everyone who helped to make these two special events happen in the year 2020. We would not have been able to accomplish these two annual events without you.
