Teeny (Murel) Coxen

February 1, 1928 – December 2, 2017

Teeny (Murel) Coxen passed away peacefully in his home on December 2, 2017. He was surrounded by family, friends and his loving wife of 68 years, Janelle. He was born on February 1, 1928 in Baker City, Oregon. The family moved to Toledo in 1935. He attended Toledo High School and excelled at sports. He met Janelle Helms of Toledo and married in 1949. They raised two children, Glenda Gordon of Toledo and Gary Coxen of Toledo. Later they also raised their grandchildren Chad Gordon of Toledo and Jill Waite of Phoenix Arizona. He was a successful businessman and co-owned “Sid and Teeny’s” grocery store in Toledo. When they outgrew that store they built the Hill Crest Thriftway. He was an active member of the Elks Club.
Besides his wife and family, fishing was his passion. Teeny is legendary for his skills on both the Siletz and Yaquina Rivers. People were known to spot him in his Gregor boat and follow it because he knew where the fish were. When others came up empty handed, he usually had a fish on. One family member confided that while he was on the river he felt closest to God.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Aulta and Bercha Coxen; his beloved daughter Glenda Gordon; his brother Harold Coxen; and granddaughter in-law Katie Gordon.
He is survived by his wife Janelle; his son Gary; his granddaughter Jill Waite; grandson Chad Gordon; granddaughter Kiah Coxen, of Toledo; and his sisters: Della Coxen of Toledo, Connie Sander of Eugene, and Leona Fay Werner of Portland. Also by great grandchildren Shelby and Ashlyn Waite, Hannah and Elena Gordon, and Izaiah Jones.
Teeny was a gentleman and a man of integrity. His word and his handshake was his bond. His home was always open for friends and family. He was the Patriarch of our family; he will be missed by all.
There will be a viewing on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. at Bateman Funeral Home 915 Yaquina Heights Dr., Newport, OR 97365. Memorial service will be held at 1:00p.m. Saturday, December 9, with a luncheon to follow at the
