LINCOLN CITY — Five years ago, Taft High School didn’t field a girls soccer team. Girls who wanted to play had to join the boys junior varsity team.
When head coach Joey Arce-Torres took over coaching three years ago, there were times there would only be nine players on the bus to travel to away game — two fewer than the 11 players that typically play on a soccer field.
Now there are 17 players in the program, and on the verge of having enough players to have a junior varsity team.
“That’s ultimately what we need,” said Arce-Torres. “To get 11 to get experience during the season, then we have an opportunity to compete.”
