Swimmers make waves at three-way


PHILOMATH — The Newport high school swim team dove into the Clemens community pool for a Tri-meet on Friday, Jan. 18.

The Cubs won the overall competition with a total of 283 points against second-place Philomath, 192.5 points.  Newport boys placed first with 196.5 points, beating Philomath, 74.5, and Sisters, 25 points.

The Newport girls team scored 86.5 points, behind Philomath, 118, and ahead of third-place Sisters, 78.5 points.

The girls 200 medley relay team of Lauren Bobo-Shisler, Charli Adams, Chyanna Blackburn and Madisen Kinner finished second. In individual events, several girls had top-6 finishes.  Blackburn won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.  Bobo-Shisler won the 50 and 100 freestyle.  Senior Sisi Husing won the 100 butterfly for the Cubs. 

The 200 medley boys’ relay team of Caden Shanks, Lucas Ellingson-Cosenza, Kai Daniels and Nick Topar finished first. The 200 freestyle relay team of Shanks, Ellingson-Cosenza, Daniels and Topar also finished first.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Newport boys again too first (Daniels, Topar, Bachart, Ellingson-Cosenza). Bachart won the 100 fly while Ellingson-Cosenza and Daniels placed first and second, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.  Shanks won the 50 free in which he competed against five top cubs sprinters. 

In the 200 individual medley, the Cub boys had the top 3 finishes, with Onestar winning the event followed up by Malloy in second and Krutzikowsky in third place.  Onestar dropped 2 seconds and Malloy dropped three seconds in the event.
