Stalking conviction for former girls coach

LINCOLN COUNTY — Former Newport High School teacher and girls basketball head coach Stephen Sain was convicted Monday of one count of stalking.

A six-person jury trial was scheduled to begin May 14, but Sain, 48, took a plea deal in which he pled guilty. He originally pled not guilty in February.

The local man stalked someone in February, causing the victim to call the police. Sain was subsequently arrested and lodged in the Lincoln County Jail and was released on $3,000 bail Feb. 15. The incident was not connected to students or the high school.

Sain’s sentencing hearing was scheduled for May 14, and as of press time Tuesday it was not clear what his sentence was. Two other counts in Sain’s case, criminal mischief and harassment, were dismissed, according to information available at the Lincoln County Circuit Court.
