For the second time in four years, the Newport boys cross country team claimed a district title.
Which, to the team, didn’t come as a surprise.
“I felt like it wasn’t unexpected,” said senior Leo Johns. “The thing we always worried about was state. We knew we had what it took to win districts.”
And the Cubs did just that. Led by junior Kolby Spink (16:04, third-place finish), all seven Newport runners — Johns (16:19, sixth) Tristian Scarborough (16:45, ninth) Caden Shanks (17:15, 13th) James Lackey (17:29, 18th) Noah Goodwin-Rice (17:35, 19th) and Sam Laurel (17:56, 23rd) finished in the top-23.
