Small apartment fire in Newport

At 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, the Newport Fire Department was dispatched to smoke in an apartment at the 600 block of SW 6th Street. "First-in" fire department units initially could only detect an odor of smoke.

After a thorough search of the building, crews were able find a small fire in another apartment unit in the same building. The fire damaged a bathroom and filled the unit with smoke. After extinguishing the fire, crews ventilated the smoke from the unit. There were no injuries reported.

The Newport Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from the Depoe Bay Fire District and the Toledo Fire Department. The Newport Police Department and Pacific West Ambulance also helped on-scene.

The Newport Fire Department responded with a fire engine, one rescue, one chief officer and 12 firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Newport Fire Department reminds residents to test their smoke detectors regularly and have a home escape plan.
