Runners traveled to win Marathon

NEWPORT — The winning runners of the annual Newport Marathon traveled from all parts of the nation to compete in Saturday’s race.

But runners from Seattle dominated the men’s event as Taylor Wolfe, 28, was the winner of the Men’s Overall title with a time of 2:46.18. In second place was Adrian Lazar Adler, 39, also of Seattle, with a time of 2:47:14. Following in third place was another Emerald City racer, Eric Card, 34, clocked at 2:49:26.1.

Daniela Decristo, 25, of Winston Salem, N.C., broke the tape for the Women’s Overall title on a time of 2:56:50. The commanding leader was followed by second-place finisher Lindsey Hagen, 35, of Bend, Ore., who clocked 2:57:12, and third-place runner Karen Lockyer, 41, of Austin Texas, who finished at 3:05:38.

Organizers with the Newport Boosters Club reported that 507 runners entered the 26.2-mile race, with 388 hardy competitors reaching the finish. Another 33 entered to walk, with 24 completing the course along the Yaquina River. The half marathon drew 439 entries while logging 397 finishers.

Kathleen Dwyer, 55, was first place in the women’s marathon walk with a time of 5:25:42.7.

Victor Bayley, 63, was first in the men’s marathon walk, finishing at 5:18:18.7.

Michelle Hurn, 35, was first in the women’s half marathon, breaking the tape at 1:27:43.4.

Bradley Laughlin, 25, took the men’s half-marathon title with a time of 1:20:07.9.

The Newport Marathon was organized for the benefit of the Newport Boosters Club with major support from Oregon Coast Bank and nearly a score of sponsors including Embarcadero Resort, City of Newport, Pepsi, Anicker Art, Bigfoot Dist., Earth20, Thompson’s Sanitary Service, Samaritan Pacific Health, Clif Bar, Allstate Ins., Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, Port of Newport, Dave’s Killer Bread, Road and Driveway Co, Good Life Brewing, Bocannaco and the News-Times.
