Raymond Gene “Butch” Grady was born on January 22, 1938 in Toledo Oregon to Donovan David Grady and Freda Ann (Nelson) Grady. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2017 at his home in Tidewater Oregon.
At the time of Butch’s birth his father was a manger with Safeway in Newport. After serving in the Navy during WWII, Don moved the family to Hepner OR where Butch attended middle school.
In 1952 the family moved to Waldport where Don and Freda bought a grocery store and named it Grady’s Y Market. Butch worked in the store and attended Waldport High School where he met the love of his life, Denise Hall. He lettered in Football and Baseball. He earned a football scholarship to Linfield College where he was a letterman and began a lifelong friendship with Howard Morris, a teammate.
When Denise graduated from Waldport High in 1959 she and Butch were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport. They then moved to Los Angeles where Butch had been accepted to an intensive marketing retailing program at USC. They returned to Oregon in 1960 and lived in the Portland where their first son Jerry was born while Butch worked for Tradewell Stores.
The same week Jerry was born they purchased a grocery store in Florence Oregon. They owned the store there until 1970, made many lifelong friends and Butch discovered his love of salmon fishing. Their family also grew to include son Tim and daughter Suzi. After selling that store they came home to Waldport and Butch worked with his dad Don and brother Roger. After Don’s passing Butch and Roger built the new building and operated it very successfully until selling it in 1994 to C&K Market Inc.
Prior to selling the store, Butch turned over day-to-day operation of the store to his good friend Dick Eley and he and Denny took an apartment in Portland where Butch worked for United Grocers training other storeowners and their employees in the use of software that he had developed to manage their stores. They also were able to help Suzi with her young children Alexa and Austin while Suzi and her husband Dave worked.
When they decided it was time to come back to Waldport full-time they moved to their wonderful place on the Alsea in Tidewater. Butch was never happier than when he was working in his yard and garden or floating in the river catching whatever was biting.
He also devoted himself to volunteering with the youth of south county. He spent hours volunteering at Waldport schools reading with children. He developed a special relationship with Senitila McKinley and loved spending time at Seashore working with the kids.
He also volunteered at South Lincoln Resources and the South Lincoln Scholarship Fund.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents Don and Freda Grady. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Denise, brothers, Roger (Julee) Grady, Rick (Kathleen) Grady, sister Meri Kay (Steve) Taylor and sons Jerry and Tim (Teresa) Grady, daughter Suzi (David) Tibbils. Grandchildren Ian Grady, Sarah (AJ) Evanko, Joshua Grady, Alexa Tibbils, Adam Grady, Zachary Grady, Austin Tibbils, & Kaitlyn Grady.
At Butch’s request there will be no services and it is the desire of his family to honor that request. The family asks that in lieu of a memorial service please consider giving of your time, skills or money to Seashore Family Literacy, South Lincoln Resources or Food Share. South county runs on volunteers and Butch was a firm believer in that.
Butch had a very strong love of and belief in Our Lord Jesus Christ. We are secure in the knowledge that he is at rest with the Lord and watching over us all.
