NEWPORT — Those who regularly drive though the intersection of NE Harney and NE Third streets have likely experienced delays as the city works to update water lines. Flaggers direct traffic as crew members and machinery work at and below street level.
“There are couple old water tanks built in 1906,” said Newport City Works Director Tim Gross. “We’re taking them out of service. We have to relay some water there at Harney Street while we take them out.”
Gross added, “There was an old control valve at the center of the intersection, and we’re replacing that. That’s how water is fed down to the Bayfront.”
Gross said the city is trying to get the work done as quickly as possible, but the project in the intersection has been extensive. He indicated it would be another two or three weeks before the project is complete.
