Primary purpose of schools is education

I read with interest the statement from three booster club presidents to the Lincoln County School Board and Superintendent Gray recommending “… that athletic trainers be hired at each Lincoln County school.”

While I have no opinion on that particular subject, I’m weary of being fed the misleading statement that “students who participate in athletics tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems …”

Of course they do — because students with grade, attendance and behavior problems aren’t allowed to participate in sports.

School athletics are fine, but let’s remember that the primary purpose of schools is education.
