Pitch, hit and run is Saturday


NEWPORT — The Newport Baseball and Softball Association will host a free Major League Baseball “Pitch Hit & Run” competition Saturday, May 4, at Betty Wheeler Memorial Field. The event starts at 3 p.m.

“Pitch Hit & Run” is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball.

“This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in an even that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball and softball skills,” said organizer Jody Malloy.

Boy and girls will be divided into four age divisions, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/4. Advancing through four levels of competition, the finalists will appear at major league ballparks and at the National Finals during 2019 MLB All-Star Week.

The individuals pitching, hitting and running champions and the all-around champ in each division age group at the local level will be awarded and advance to the sectional trials.

Participants need a copy of a valid birth document for age verification; parents or guardians must fill out a registration and waiver form prior to the start. For questions, call Jody Malloy at 541-961-3757.
