Pink shrimp season opener delayed

NEWPORT – For the second consecutive year, Oregon’s commercial pink shrimp season has been delayed because of a price dispute and product that isn’t ready to be harvested.

The season began officially on April 1, 2017, but Scott Groth, project leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), said “there’s no point in rushing out now because eggs are still in the shrimp’s bellies.”

Last year’s opener was delayed for a month because of stalled negotiations between fishermen and processors, and an overabundance of sub-legal shrimp.
