NEWPORT — Tom Swinford, the race director of the Newport Marathon, believes that the 26.2-mile race is the largest sporting event in Lincoln County.
On Saturday, June, 2 more than 1,000 people participated — 507 competed in the marathon, 486 in the half-marathon and 32 marathon walkers — but the numbers don’t stop there.
“We had over 1,000 people register,” Swinford said. “They average about two, two and a half people per (runner). That’s an influx of about 3,000 people into the county. I can’t think of a single event that is larger.”
Winning the marathon was 40-year old Rob Russell from Yachats, who finished with a time of 2:42.31 (6:13-mile pace), four minutes faster than the next closest runner Nick Scalfone (2:46.59), the 32-year old from Bend.
