Oregon doesn’t stop at the beach

Science on Tap talk on marine reserves

Ever heard of a marine reserve? Or wondered what’s lurking below the surface of the ocean off the coast? People are invited to learn about this topic at the next Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Science on Tap event, which will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Rogue Ales’ Brewer’s on the Bay, located at 2320 SE Marine Science Drive in South Beach.

Cristen Don, marine reserves program leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, will take people on a virtual underwater tour of Oregon’s five marine reserve sites — areas off the coast that have been designated for conservation and scientific research. See what habitats and marine life call these places home, and learn about the scientific research being conducted and some of the innovative underwater research tools being used.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m., and the presentation will begin at 6 p.m. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and early arrival is recommended. Food and beverage will be available for purchase from the regular menu.
