One of Us Productions, a Yachats 501(c)(3) community theater company, recently announced the recipients of its 2019 Student Scholarship award.
This annual scholarship program is for graduating seniors or adults enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution. In order to be eligible for this award, candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, previous involvement in the performing arts and submit an essay about the impact of performing arts in their lives.
Also this year, scholarship eligibility was expanded to Newport and Toledo high school students.
For the very first time, One of Us Productions has awarded three scholarships to graduating Waldport High School students. All of the recipients are participants in English teacher Dominic Sharp’s drama club.
Sharp says, “Each of these students was exemplary in meeting their rehearsal and performance commitments while juggling extracurricular activities.”
Matthew Shepherd was awarded the first place scholarship of $1,000 due to his essay, a 3.6 GPA, and three years as an actor in Waldport High School’s drama club. Shepherd said he will be attending Northwest Christian University in the fall and plans to become a physical therapist.
One of Us Productions also awarded Robert Hawkins and Akasha Reich scholarships of $750 to acknowledge their academic excellence, involvement in the performing arts and application essays. Hawkins will be attending the University of Oregon, and Reich is enrolled at Clatsop Community College.
In presenting the scholarship awards, One of Us Productions Board President Carl Foster Miller said, “We had a difficult time deciding on an individual recipient this year. Each of these three students possesses outstanding academic achievements, plus demonstrated commitment to the performing arts, recognizing how it has helped shape their future goals. So, this year we are awarding three scholarships.”
The annual student scholarship program was initiated in 2011 and represents part of One of Us Productions’ mission to support other community organizations.
