No. 1 Tigers pounce on No. 8 Eagles

The Taft baseball team picked up its fifth straight win with a 10-0 victory in six innings over Santiam Christian to remain undefeated in West Valley League play. The decisive win over a top-10 opponent catapulted the Tigers to the top of the 3A OSAA rankings — who entered the game ranked No. 2 — with 10 games remaining in the season. The Tigers pounced on Santiam Christian’s Grant Carley for five runs in the first inning, then added two more runs in the second inning to take control of the game early. “The games go a lot better when you jump out on teams early,” said first-year head coach Matt Hilgers. “It makes things a lot easier for us coaching. We come out, score runs, put pressure on the other team, that’s been M.O all year — put runs up early and let the chips fall where they will.” Taft has put a run on the board in all but one of the games during its current five-game winning streak. The offense has jumped out to early leads, outscoring its five opponents 13-2 in the first inning.
