FLORENCE — Twenty different wrestling teams took part in the 2020 Nick Lutz Invitational at Siuslaw High School in Florence on Saturday, Jan. 18, including Toledo, Newport, Waldport and Siletz/Eddyville.

The Lincoln County schools combined for a memorable day, as a handful of athletes placed during the wrestling meet.

For the Waldport Irish, led by head coach Joseph R. Chavez, Mary Albitz finished in fourth place, while Kaleb Chavez recorded a first-place finish on the day.

Kye Hayner, Trenton Hutchinson and Hunter Lewis showed out for the boys. Lewis finished the day first with a score of 28 team points in the 170-pound division after a 10-1 win by fall over Colby Olsen (Sutherlin). Hayner finished third overall at 152 pounds after a 14-4 win by major decision over Logan McAllister (Willamette), and Hutchinson finished third after a 8-3 win by fall over Liam Buskerud (North Bend).

On the girls side, the Boomers only continued to show out. Cocoa Barrett placed second and scored 2.0 team points after a winning by decision over Brooke Carter (North Douglas) for the 100-pound division, while Karhma Dawson won three-straight bouts in route to a first-place finish in the 155-pound division. Dawson beat Alexis Cervantes (Sutherlin), Lillian Wood (Cottage Grove) and Alexis Christie (Cottage Grove).

Chelo Garcia (Newport) also had a day to remember after defeating Barrett in the 100-pound division.
