PHILOMATH — Steve Sain summed up Friday night in Philomath perfectly.
“It’s a great day for Newport,” the girl’s head basketball coach said.
And indeed it was. The boys and girls’ teams swept Philomath on their own court as the regular season begins to wind down.
Megan Wagner and the Hargett Twins, Madi and Halle, combined for 54 points in No. 12 Newport’s 65-53 win over Philomath to keep its Oregon West Conference (OWC) title hopes alive entering the final 11 days of the regular season, where the Cubs play two OSAA top-10 teams.
But as fine of a night it was for the girls, the boy’s 65-60 win, in a packed-Philomath gym, is a win the team won’t soon forget. It was a win that had players kissing babies afterward.
