Newport Symphony goes Italian

Adam Flatt will conduct the Newport Symphony Orchestra on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, at the Newport Performing Arts Center

Performances set for Nov. 3 and 4

It's Bella Italia this weekend as the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean presents its concert with an Italian flavor on Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.

Under the direction of Maestro Adam Flatt, the program opens with Franz Schubert's “Overture in C, 'In the Italian Style.'” Schubert's concert overtures are vibrant, youthful works, composed during the years 1811 to 1819, when the master was in his teens and early 20s. Also included in the program is Maurice Ravel's “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”

Johann Hertel's “Trumpet Concerto no. 3 in D Major” will feature soloist Katherine Evans. Originally from Boston, Evans is the principal trumpet of the Newport Symphony Orchestra and has held principal trumpet positions in several New England orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Brockton and Waltham, Mass. symphony orchestras, the Harvard-Radcliffe Bach Society Orchestra and Harvard-Radcliffe Baroque Orchestra. She holds a master’s of music degree in trumpet performance from the Longy School of Music and a bachelor’s degree in English and music from Harvard University. Evans will also be the soloist for the performance of Alan Hovhaness' “Prayer of Saint Gregory for Trumpet and Strings.”

Concluding the concert will be Felix Mendelssohn's “Symphony no. 4 'The Italian.'” The work has its origins (as has the composer's Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture) in the tour of Europe, which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831. Its inspiration is the color and atmosphere of Italy.

Performances are Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert talk by Flatt at 6:45 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Following each concert will again feature a special complimentary Wine Down, featuring select wines from the Flying Dutchman Winery of Otter Rock, plus an array of food items. Stay and mingle with Flatt, guest artists and orchestra members.

Tickets, $25 and $39 (plus fees) and $10 for students, are on sale at the PAC box office, by calling 541-265-2787 or online at NewportSymphony.org. The PAC is located at 777 W Olive St. in Newport.
