NEWPORT — On July 9, the Walla Walla Police Department announced via Facebook that they were investigating the homicide of Kyle Jordan Martz, 35, after discovering his remains.
Martz graduated from Newport High School in 2002, earned his bachelor’s degree with a double major in German studies and gender studies in 2007 and taught abroad for several years following. He was employed as the international student and scholar adviser at Whitman College at the time of his death. Martz also advised the GLBTQ affinity group, along with other student organizations.
Per the police department’s release, Martz’s remains were discovered while the police were responding to a missing person call, and his car was missing. Approximately five hours later, Oregon State Police reported the vehicle was located in the area of Baker City. Colby James Hedman, 23, was arrested and identified as a suspect in homicide of Martz.
Hedman is currently being held at the Baker County Jail in Oregon, with 10 offenses listed.
