The Newport Community Drum Circle will resume its regular, twice-monthly summer schedule this month with a slight change in the times.
The popular, year-round event will return to its regular Tuesday summer dates, meeting every first and third Tuesday, beginning May 7, in the glass enclosed gazebo at Don & Ann Davis Park, but they will be meeting a little earlier. Instead of the usual 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. time slot, they will be meeting this year from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Drum circle coordinator Chandler Davis said the time was changed primarily to make it easier for city crews to get the gazebo locked up by the city’s mandated closing time for the building of 8 p.m. “However, I’m hoping that the earlier time will also be more convenient for families with small children and for folks who have to get up early during the week,” Davis said.
The free and family friendly open drum circles at the park will celebrate its 12th year this summer. All ages are welcome; alcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited; and no musical experience is needed. They will even lend you a drum if you don’t have one.
The park is at the west end of Olive Street, across from the Newport Performing Arts Center. For more information, contact Davis at [email protected] or 541-272-4615.
