NEWPORT — Former Newport City Councilor Dean Sawyer was sworn in as mayor Monday along with three City Councilors Ryan Parker, CM Hall and incumbent David Allen.
All four elected officials took the oath of office Monday evening before the regular Newport City Council meeting, which also appointed Beatriz Botello and Cynthia Jacoby to the open vacancies on the city council that were not up for election in November.
David Allen was elected council president, taking the title fellow councilor Dietmar Goebel had held in the previous term.
In what was perhaps a first for a Newport elected official, CM Hall, who works as co-director of the DeafBlind Interpreting National Training & Resource Center at Western Oregon University, took her oath of office in English and American Sign Language, signing the oath of office after reciting the oath verbally.
Also Monday, Lincoln County Commissioners Kaety Jacobson and Doug Hunt, were sworn in and longtime Commissioner Claire Hall was elected chair of the board.
