Myrth Lucille “Sunny” Loring passed away at 7:30 am, Aug. 3, 2018 at Laurelhurst Village in Portland, Oregon after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 20, 1936 to Lucien Fred Loring and Myrth Lucille Mason in Milwaukie, Oregon. She was raised with her two older brothers in the “house on the river” (Willamette River), built by her father, until she left for college.
Myrth learned to read at an early age and loved a challenge, so her mother had her learn to play the piano. By age five, she was playing the piano in front of audiences. Myrth attended Concord Elementary School and graduated from Milwaukie High School in 1952.
Myrth majored in piano at Willamette University with a minor in music theory. While at Willamette, Myrth was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon (Phi Lambda chapter), a women’s national music honorary and served as Treasurer.
She married her college sweetheart, Lawrence Monk on Aug. 31, 1956 in Oak Grove, Oregon. She graduated early in Feb. 1957 and soon was off to be with her new husband as he attended seminary at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Daughter Cheryl was the first born, followed by son Daryl, and the four headed cross-country back to Salem, Oregon. Soon daughters Tanya and Laurie were born.
Myrth returned to live in the “house on the river” in Milwaukie until she moved to the coast. She resided at Seal Rock for more than 20 years.
She was very artistic and among her hobbies were tole painting, crafting, beachcombing and sewing. She also loved to collect things, always thinking and planning how she could use a particular item in creating something new. Her passion, however, was square dancing. She and her partner would dance at many of the square dance events up and down the coast and all over Oregon. Her three cats were very dear to her and she was always looking out for them.
Her parents and brothers Lucien Jr. and Alden preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter Cheryl (husband Ken Gertz, daughter Jaquie Fralish, son Sean Gertz), son Daryl (wife Julie Monk, daughter Bonnie Kraxberger, son Jason Monk, daughter Michelle Monk), daughter Tanya Hammer (sons Eric, Peter, Jax and Johnny Hammer); daughter Laurie Fuglee (sons Nick and Mike Patterson, Shane and Justin Fuglee). She had 2 great grandchildren, Arken Fuglee and Odin Kraxberger. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Myrth donated her body to science at Oregon Health Sciences University and will be cremated. A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
