Berg’s 20th-century shocker, “Wozzeck,” stars baritone Peter Mattei in the title role, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium and soprano Elza van den Heever as the long-suffering Marie, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, in the Newport Performing Arts Center’s Alice Silverman Theatre. Screened live in HD from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, this new production is hosted locally by Ken Combs.

After wowing audiences with his astounding production of “Lulu” in 2015, South African artist William Kentridge now focuses his extraordinary visual imagination on Berg’s other operatic masterpiece, set in an apocalyptic pre-World War I environment. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, with no intermission.
