Marvin Uhlenhake

October 26, 1921 – February 27, 2017

Marv Uhlenhake, long time Newport resident and business developer died on February 27, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was 95 years old. Marvin was born on October 26, 1921 to Bernard W. Uhlenhake and Frances B. (Feltz) Uhlenhake in the German immigrant community of St. Henry, Ohio. He had five sisters, Mary (deceased), Ruth, Florence, Margie (deceased), Roma, and Ann and one brother, Walter.
With the outbreak of WWII, Marv enlisted in the Coast Guard where his duty as a radio operator on a crash boat brought him to Newport, Oregon in 1944. He met Elaine Shane, daughter of the Abbey Hotel owners Bill and Madeleine Shane. Elaine and Marv were married on May 29, 1945 in the old Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Marvin and Elaine spent their lifetimes working hard to develop and operate many businesses in Newport. Those included the old Abbey Hotel on Newport’s waterfront, Moby Dicks Restaurant, The Jolly Knight Motel (now Econo Lodge), and The Windjammer Motel (now Hallmark Resort). He also developed Chamber’s Park Subdivision with his friend, Tom Becker and many land parcels which are now occupied by well-known Newport Businesses. Marv invested in Newport throughout his lifetime. He always felt Newport had great potential.
Marvin was an active member of the Newport community. He served on the Newport City Council, was a member of the Newport Rotary Club, the Agate Beach Men’s Golf Club, the Knights of Columbus, Newport Elks Club, and the American Legion. He served many years on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Newport. He was devoted and an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Marvin enjoyed his family, his church, and his many Newport friends. His wife Elaine, preceded him in death in 2011. He is survived by his daughters: JoAnne (John) Clark, Janet Clay, Jane (Bruce) Bohman – eight grandchildren: Ann (Eric) Heringer, Kathleen (John) Duncan, Keegan Clay, Jordan Clay, Logan Clay, Holly (Keith) Okerstrom, Christine (Ryan) Lawrence, and Lisa (Joel) Petersen – and eleven great grandchildren: Madeleine Heringer; Nathaniel and Elaine Duncan; Elise, Corinne, and Grant Okerstrom; Hanna, Emma, and Felicity Lawrence; Larsen and Elaina Petersen.
A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 am on Saturday, March 25.
