Marlyn Roy Kaps October 9, 1932 – December 9, 2019

Marlyn Kaps

Marlyn Kaps of Toledo, Oregon passed away on December 9, 2019 at Pete Moore Hospice House in Eugene, Oregon. He left us amazed at his tenacity to hand onto life until he got one final visit from his children and each of his grandchildren.

Marlyn was born October 9, 1932 to John and Francis Kaps in Elm Creek, Nebraska. The family included his older brothers Lyle and Tommy, and younger siblings Robert and Kathleen. His youngest years were spent in Elm Creek and Independence, Oregon. After living in Port Orchard, Washington during WWII, where their father worked in the shipyards, the entire Kaps family finally settled in Toledo, Oregon.

After graduating from Toledo High School, Marlyn proudly enlisted in the US marine Corp. He was honorably discharged three years later, having attained the rank of sergeant. Back in Toledo, he met his lifetime love, Eleanor (Ellie) West. They married in 1958 and their family grew to include daughter Gayl, son Bryon, and Marlyn’s sister Kathleen. Marlyn’s employment encompassed time at the CD Johnson sawmill and Georgia Pacific plywood mill in Toledo. His final job was with the City of Newport from which he retired as a Public Works Supervisor in 1995 – and then the fun began!

Marlyn and Ellie were constant companions and had many adventures together until Ellie’s passing in 2012. They travelled the back roads of the West in search of ghost towns. Marlyn believed the dustier the road, the better. They cruised to Alaska aboard a very small ship so they could get up close and personal with the glaciers. They enjoyed heritage festivals – Scottish, Celtic or Scandinavian; it didn’t matter. In addition to travelling, Marlyn worked to educate his granddaughters. Lesson 1# - bumblebees don’t sting; Lesson #2 – learning to skip and pet cats properly; Lesson #3 – scrambled eggs and peas are a perfectly fine dinner. He captained many a houseboat during family vacations, baked and shared award-winning gingersnap cookies, and used his photography skill to chronicle the marriage of his oldest granddaughter. Oh, how well miss his many talents.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Francis; brother Lyle and his loving wife Ellie. Left behind are brothers Tommy and Robert Kaps; sister Kathleen Dobson; daughter Gayl and son-in-law Jim Ritz; son Bryon and daughter-in-law Tammy Kaps; granddaughters and their spouses Stephanie and Adam Peterson; Jill Ritz and Dillon Franklin; Ashley and James Roush. Last, but absolutely not least, are his adored great grandchildren Lainie, Hali, Reegan and Gracyn Peterson; Nora and Dax Franklin; Kohl Roush.

As a family, we will celebrate his life at a later date.
