TOLEDO — Toledo dominated the 2018-19 Sunset All-League boys’ basketball lists revealed after last week’s third-place showing at the OSAA state championships.

Named Sunset League player of the year was Conner Marchant, who led the Boomers to an astonishing 27-2 season record. The six-foot junior guard was also named the league’s defensive player of the year.

Tapped for coach of the year was Toledo varsity mentor Eddie Townsend.

Marchant is a two-time, 2A All-State first-team designee and previous Sunset player of the year who serves as a “role model” for the Boomers, according to coaches. The 17-year-old basketball phenomenon maintains a 3.5 GPA and has indicated he wants to play college ball after a two-year mission with his church. His older brother Isaiah was named state player of the year in 2016.

Townsend, in his fifth year as head coach of the Boomers, described his winning basketball strategy in two words: “attack mode.” He described his basketball team as the “cream of the crop,” producing the majority of student leaders and volunteers. His sports background includes four years of prep basketball and a starting position on the Southern Oregon University football team.

Named to the Sunset League first team were Jaydn Spangler and Jaxon Rosewski. Townsend called Spangler, a 6 foot 2 inch senior, “one of the most prolific shooters in the state” according to OSAA records, claiming a 45.2 percent success rate on three-point attempts. He previously made the second all-league team twice in a row.

Sophomore Rozewski, Toledo’s all-state quarterback who broke passing records last fall, is described as a “big-time presence” on and off the court. His main role was to disrupt Boomer opponents, averaging 11 rebounds and two blocked shots per game. As a freshman, he made first-team all-league basketball and third team, all state.

Meanwhile, Waldport freshman Zak Holsey earned a spot on the Sunset second team. Honorable Mentions were also bestowed to Waldport’s Jacob Farmer and Kellan Howard. Irish senior Ramon Topete earned a position on the Sunset All-League defensive team.

Also earning honorable mentions were Toledo players Mason “Spiderman” McAlpine, a sophomore who averaged 19 points per game, and defensive expert Clifton Howard.
