Man who set house fire took own life

NEWPORT –– A man who died in a home fire early Thursday morning, Nov. 1 lit the fire intentionally before taking his own life, investigators have determined.

Matthew Hogue Lee, 42, a resident of the home, was alone in the single-story house at 445 Northeast 8th Street and was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters arrived to find smoke emerging from the roof.

Once the fire was suppressed, Newport Investigators worked with members of the Fire Arson Response Team, which is made up of representatives from Lincoln County Law Enforcement, Lincoln County Fire Agencies, Oregon State Police, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.  Lee’s cause of death was determined to be due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The fire was put out quickly with assistance from Seal Rock, Depoe Bay and Toledo fire departments. The fire was contained mainly to one room within the residence.  The remainder of the home was severely damaged by heat and smoke from the fire.
