Man arrested on encouraging child sex abuse charges

NEWPORT — Officers from the Newport Police Department arrested Martin Lafever Monday after Lafever’s cell phone was found in the bathroom at the Starbucks in town, on which was found child porn images and search terms related to child porn.

Lafever later came back looking for his lost cell phone, and was referred to the Newport Police Officer still on the site. During the conversation with the police officer, Lafever said the phone was only in his possession for the last several weeks but denied knowing of any pornographic images on his phone.

Lafever allowed police to search his phone, during which more pornographic images showing children, as well as pornographic videos showing children. Lafever said the images downloaded and saved themselves on his phone, but police officers involved in the search were able to see they were downloaded and moved between the cell phone and “the cloud.”

He was arrested and booked at the Lincoln County Jail, where he was charged with nine counts of encouraging child sex abuse in the second degree. His bail was set at $450,000.
