Local boats headed to Alaskan waters

Prayers for the fishing fleet

A large crowd, made up of commercial fishermen, their families and other members of the community, gathered at the Port of Newport International Terminal at noon on Thursday, Jan. 10, to offer prayers for the fishing boats that are heading up to Alaska’s Bering Sea this week to fish for cod and pollack.

The prayer service was led by Pastor Luke Frechette, from South Beach Church.

The boats generally make the eight to 10-day voyage as a group, so that they can watch out for each other during the journey, which at times takes them 400 to 500 miles from land.
