Lighthouse ghost story fun, but fiction

The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse ghost story reprinted in “Old News: A Look at Lincoln County’s Past,” is fun, especially this time of year, but it should be noted that it is not true.

The fictional short story, published in an 1899 issue of “Pacific Monthly” magazine, was penned by the sister-in-law of poet Joaquin Miller, Lischen M. Miller of Eugene. The story was titled “The Haunted Light at Newport by the Sea.” The context in Dorothy Wall’s book of the oft-repeated “ghost” story should be noted. Best to look at the original story, which, I believe, is available at the Lincoln County Historical Society.
