Let the repairs begin

Traffic on Highway 101 north of Newport slowed considerably this week as work crews with the Oregon Department of Transportation began their annual battle with irresistible geologic forces near the base of Cape Foulweather. Landslides and sinkholes result in dubious underpinnings along the mile-long stretch of highway cited in a 1965 scientific study as unique for its unstable geography. “Mass movement north of Yaquina Head is much more severe than erosion in areas of similar lithology and rock attitude,” concluded the authors of Coastal Landslides of Northern Oregon.
