Leland passed away at home due to complications of Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Born to George and Anna Taraba in Princeton, Missouri, Leland graduated from Cainsville Mo. High School in 1956. Leland married Terrie (Kopp) Taraba in Lamoni, Iowa and together they raised two daughters; Laura Kantor and Julia Sandvall.
He farmed for his mother in Missouri until her death in 1975; then in 1977, Leland and Terrie moved to Newport, OR with their two daughters with the intent of trying it out for a year. They never made it back. Leland was also a manager of Napa Auto Parts Store in Newport for many years. He retired from Walmart in 2008, after working there for 15 years. Leland was a member of the Toledo 49’ers Square Dance Club 1980-1995 and also the president of the club for two years. He was a member of the Yaquina Art Association Photography club, and supported the Parkinson’s Support Group (Newport Chapter).
Leland loved photography! He sold his framed art, note cards and refrigerator magnets at the Newport Farmers Market for 20 years and at the Waldport street market for 5 years. Leland was also an avid Portland Blazers fan!
He is preceded in death by his parents George and Anna Taraba and five older siblings. Leland is survived by wife Terrie, daughters Laura (Douglas) Kantor, Julia (Eric) Sandvall, & granddaughter Brook, all of Bend Oregon.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Yacht Club in Newport on Sunday, March 22nd from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All relatives and friends are welcome. Flowers are warmly welcomed and other contributions can be sent to Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon. Bateman Funera
