KYAQ, 91.7 FM, Lincoln County’s only community radio station, has been on the air and streaming online successfully for six years. The station’s success is almost entirely due to the commitment of the all-volunteer staff and the generosity of supporters. In order to continue broadcasting locally and award-winning nationally produced radio shows, KYAQ is dependent on community fundraising, including local underwriters, as the station receives no financial support from federal resources such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
As part of KYAQ’s fundraising efforts, the station is holding its first ever chili cook-off fundraiser on Saturday, July 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, located at 750 SE Bay Boulevard in Newport. Six local restaurants — the Rogue Brewery, Pacific Kitchen at Nye Beach, Oceana Cooperative, Lord Brixxton’s, TicTacTaco and Bier One — will be competing to see who has the tastiest chili recipe. The winner will be determined by anyone attending the event who is willing to be an official chili taster.
This family friendly event will be accompanied by live music performed by Gib and Nancy Bernhardt, Bill and Franki T. Dalbey, Robert Rubin, Debbie Dypold, Charlie Loomis and Dean Perkins.
Entry to the event, which includes the ability to be an official chili taster, is by a donation of $10. To down a full bowl of chili, a donation of $5 is requested. The Rogue Brewery will be providing three types of beer to accompany people’s choices of chili for a donation of $5 per glass.
As part of the fundraising effort, KYAQ will hold a raffle during the cook-off, with a gift basket going to the winner.
