John Cox Messenger passed away on October 25, 2018 in Newport, OR surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Cleveland, OH on February 22, 1938, and studied biology at Hiram College. He carried out his PhD research in botany at Yale and the University of Kentucky, and worked on water treatment and other environmental issues. He was a lifelong learner, and in retirement frequented Newport’s aquarium and public library and took classes at the community college. John was unselfish and funny in life; in death, he donated his body to medical research. Special thanks go to his care teams at Samaritan and Avamere and his friends at Newport North/South Apartments. He is survived by brother Lewis and family in Minnesota. He requested there be no services after his passing. In lieu of a memorial, John, ever-generous himself, would no doubt be honored to have his friends and family pay it forward in whatever way they can to the organization of their choosing.
